I’ve met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of Walking, that is, of taking walks, - who had a genius, so to speak, for sauntering: which word is beautifully derived from “idle people who roved about the country, in the Middle Ages, and asked charity, under pretence of going à la Sainte Terre, to the Holy Land, till the children exclaimed, ‘There goes a Sainte-Terrer’, a Saunterer, a Holy-Lander”

Na een reeks omzwervingen vestigde Sarah-Joy Zwarts (Maastricht, 1987) zich opnieuw in haar geboortestreek. Ze genoot een opleiding in zowel geschiedenis als vrije kunsten, met een bijzondere focus op tekenen. Beide disciplines combineert ze in haar beeldend werk, waarbij ze een open methodiek toepast om taal, vorm, materiaal en verhaal zo dicht mogelijk bij het onderwerp te laten aansluiten.
Zwarts gelooft dat er een grote parallel bestaat tussen de handeling van het creëren en de handeling van het ronddwalen. Door te bewegen ontsluier je immers nieuwe inzichten, die zich daaropvolgend weer tot nieuwe paden ontvouwen om te vervolgen. Het kunnen dwalen voelt als een acte de révolte, een creatieve daad.
Wat als men zich binnen dit dwalen echter richt op de dwaalbare plaats zelf? Welke dialoog ontstaat er dan tussen wandelaar en landschap? Wat vertellen zij elkaar, en in hoeverre kan dit leiden tot tastbare artefacten?
Sinds een aantal jaren richt Zwarts zich op braakliggende non-places dichtbij haar thuis (Eigenbilzen), vanuit de overtuiging dat deze sites de meest uitnodigende voorwaarden scheppen om te dwalen. Haar huidige focus ligt op een hellingflank bij het Albertkanaal, waarbij ze voornamelijk onderzoekt welk type herkenningsstructuur (baken) hier zou kunnen passen. Als een dialoog tussen zichzelf en het landschap laat ze dit object zichzelf procesmatig vormen.
Naast haar werk als beeldend kunstenaar draagt Sarah bij als docent op de Architectuur Academie Maastricht.

After having roamed about for some time, Sarah-Joy Zwarts (Maastricht, 1987) settled back in her native region. She was educated in both history and fine arts, with a particular focus on drawing. She combines both disciplines in her visual work, where she applies an open methodology to connect language, form, material and story as closely as possible to her subjects.
Sarah-Joy believes that there is a great parallel between the act of creating and the act of wandering. After all, by moving you unveil new insights, which subsequently unfold into new paths to follow. Being able to wander feels like an act de révolte, a creative act.
