Voor deze tentoonstelling werkte Zwarts verder rond een afgelegen helling aan het Albertkanaal. Vertrekkend vanuit een zeker ‘thuisgevoel’ vroeg ze zich af wat de minimale ruimtelijke condities zouden zijn om samen te leven met dit landschap. Deze vraag leidde tot het maken van een bescheiden platform: een lappendeken van tegels, gemaakt met rood pigment dat overvloedig op de locatie te vinden is.

Omdat de helling in directe verbinding staat met het Kempisch Plateau, kent het landschap veel natuurlijk reliëf door afstromend regenwater. Elke bezoeker wordt uitgenodigd om op deze karaktereigenschap te reageren: stap gerust (zonder schoenen) op het platform en laat het materiaal eveneens een tijdelijke indruk achterlaten.

What is already there

For this exhibition, Sarah-Joy continued working on a remote spot at the slope of the Albertcanal. Somehow connecting it to a feeling of home, she wondered what the preliminary spatial conditions would be for someone to coexist with this landscape. This question led to realizing a humble platform: a patchwork of tiles, made with site-specific red pigment. Cast on site, they are shown here topsy-turvy, allowing the landscape to speak up in this predominantly man-made context.

As the canal slope is directly connected to the Kempisch Plateau, (rain)water finds it way down easily, leaving relief imprints frequently. Each visitor is invited to respond to this characteristic: just step onto the platform (shoes removed) and let the material leave a temporary imprint on your heels.

'Wat er al is' is de wereld die ons dagelijks omringt, de wereld waar we ons doorheen bewegen. Het is een wereld vol objecten en taferelen: het koffiekopje in onze hand, het stromende water in onze gootsteen, de rit naar het werk, de struiken langs de weg, ons bureau. Een decor waarin we onze belangrijke zaken afhandelen, ogenschijnlijk los ervan. Ondanks het visuele en mentale lawaai van deze zich voortdurend ontwikkelde en veeleisende wereld, zijn onze ontmoetingen met ermee vaak stil en onvervuld. Deze ontmoetingen hebben hun magie verloren, hun smaak. denken we niet eerder aan de kosten van onze tafel dan eraan te denken met onze vingers over het oppervlak te glijden, de nerven van het hout te voelen, het te horen ademen en kraken? Onze interacties met deze alledaagse scènes lijken statisch, alsof we verstard zijn in onze manier van omgaan met de wereld.

Hoe kunnen we breken met deze egocentrische benadering van de wereld? Wat als we ons uitrekken en buigen, op onze knieën kruipen, spelen, met een zoekende blik, om te voelen wat de wereld ons wil vertellen? Meer dan slechts oppervlakkig. Onze handen begraven in de aarde, totdat de grond onder onze nagels kruipt, diep in ons wezen. kunnen onze lichamen poreus worden, zodat niet alleen wij in de wereld doordringen, maar de wereld ook in ons?

Wat er al is, is de wereld om je heen, die vraagt om je actieve en multisensorische betrokkenheid. Het is een verkenning van de ogenschijnlijk alledaagse aspecten van ons leven die stilletjes het weefsel van ons bestaan vormen. Vier kunstenaars nodigen ons uit om zacht en kneedbaar te worden, om zowel fysiek als figuurlijk te knielen, op zoek naar een dialoog met onze omgeving. Door een gelijkwaardige en wederkerige relatie te cultiveren, ontvouwt zich een dichte, voelbare wereld. Zo zal onze wereld ongetwijfeld rijker worden.

'What is already there' is the world that surrounds us daily, the world we move through. It is full of objects and scenes: the coffee cup in our hand, the flowing water in the sink, the drive to work, the shrubs by the roadside, our desk. A backdrop in which we conduct our important affairs, seemingly independent of it. Despite the visual and mental noise of this ever-evolving and demanding world, our encounters with it are often mute. These encounters have lost their magic, their flavor. Is it not that we would more likely think about the cost of our table than running our fingers over its surface, feeling the grain of the wood, its breathing, and creaking. Our interactions with these everyday scenes seem static, as if we have stiffened in our way of engaging with the world.

How can we break out of this egocentric approach to encountering the world? What if we stretch and bend, crawl on our knees, play, with a searching gaze, to sense what the world wants to tell us? More than just superficially. Burrowing our hands into the earth until the dirt digs under our fingernails, deep into our being. Can our bodies become porous, so that not only we can permeate the world, but the world can permeate us?

What is already there is the world around you. What it demands is your way of engaging with it. The world calls for your active and multisensory participation. “Wat er al is” invites us to enter into a dialogue with our more-than-human world. By cultivating an equitable and reciprocal relationship, a dense, sentient world unfolds. In doing so, our world will undoubtedly be richer for it.
